Pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard is one of the most prominent and respected musicians in the classical music world today. Known for his virtuosic technique, probing intellect, and adventurous programming, Aimard has built a career that spans several decades and multiple continents.

Born in Lyon, France in 1957, Aimard displayed an early talent for the piano, studying with Yvonne Loriod (herself a well-known pianist and sister of composer Olivier Messiaen) at the Paris Conservatoire from the age of 12. He went on to win first prize at the prestigious International Messiaen Competition in 1973, launching his career as one of the leading interpreters of Messiaen's music.

Since then, Aimard has become known for his interpretations of other major composers, including Mozart, Beethoven, Schumann, Debussy, and Ravel. His performances are marked by a deep sensitivity to the nuances of each work, as well as an ability to find connections and contrasts between different pieces and styles.

Aimard's work as a soloist and chamber musician has taken him to some of the world's leading concert halls and festivals, including New York's Lincoln Center, London's Royal Festival Hall, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Salzburg Festival. He has collaborated with many of the most esteemed conductors and orchestras, including Simon Rattle, Daniel Barenboim, and the Cleveland Orchestra.

In addition to his work as a performer, Aimard is also a noted teacher and pedagogue. He has served on the faculty of the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg, the Paris Conservatoire, and was recently appointed artistic director of the Piano Festival Ruhr.

One of Aimard's most notable achievements is his association with the contemporary classical music ensemble Ensemble Intercontemporain. Aimard served as the ensemble's artistic director from 2000 to 2008, leading them in performances of works by living composers such as Pierre Boulez, György Ligeti, and Karlheinz Stockhausen. He has also been active in commissioning new works for solo piano, including pieces by Elliott Carter, Harrison Birtwistle, and Tristan Murail.

Given his reputation for intellectual curiosity and bold programming choices, it's no surprise that Aimard has embraced the possibilities offered by modern technology. In 2015, he launched a project called "The Art of Fugue" that combined live performance with computer-generated visualizations of Bach's score. The following year, he collaborated with the video artist Tal Rosner on a multimedia project exploring the music of Olivier Messiaen.

Despite the breadth and depth of his career, Aimard remains dedicated to expanding his musical horizons and exploring new frontiers. As he told The Guardian in a 2016 interview: "I'm always amazed at the richness of what there is still to explore…there are so many more things to discover."
