Pittsfield Colonials: A History of Baseball in Western Massachusetts

The Pittsfield Colonials were a professional baseball team located in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. The team played in the independent Canadian-American Association of Professional Baseball, which was later renamed as the Can-Am League.

The franchise was founded in 2010, following the demise of the former professional teams that had called Pittsfield home, including the Pittsfield Astros, Pittsfield Mets, and Berkshire Black Bears. The city was without a professional baseball team for several years before the arrival of the Colonials.

The inaugural season for the Pittsfield Colonials was a success, with the team finishing in second place in the Can-Am League's regular season standings. However, they ultimately fell short in the playoffs, losing to the Quebec Capitales in the championship series.

Over the years, the Colonials faced struggles both on and off the field. Attendance numbers were lower than desired, resulting in financial difficulties for the team. In 2011, the Can-Am League took ownership of the franchise after the team failed to pay its bills. The league then sold the team to new ownership for the 2012 season.

Despite the challenges, the team continued to play in Pittsfield until 2011. In 2012, the franchise relocated to Old Orchard Beach, Maine, becoming the Old Orchard Beach Raging Tide. The Raging Tide played for one season before folding due to similar financial struggles.

The Pittsfield Colonials may not have had a long tenure in the baseball world, but they were an important part of the history of baseball in western Massachusetts. They provided a source of entertainment and community pride for fans in the area, and their legacy lives on today.

In recent years, Pittsfield has brought professional baseball back to the city with the Pittsfield Suns, who also play in the Can-Am League. The Suns have been successful on and off the field, winning the championship in their inaugural season in 2012 and becoming a staple of summertime entertainment for the Pittsfield community.

The rich history of baseball in western Massachusetts is something that continues to be celebrated today, with the Pittsfield Colonials being an important part of that story. Despite their short time in Pittsfield, they left an impact on the local community and the baseball world as a whole.
