Portland Steel is a former arena football team that was based in Portland, Oregon. The team played in the Arena Football League (AFL) for one season in 2016. Though its tenure was brief, the team remains a significant part of Portland’s sports history.

The Steel were founded in 2014 as an expansion team of the AFL. They were owned by Terry Emmert, owner of Emmert International, a heavy-haul and rigging company based in Clackamas, Oregon. The team played its home games at the Moda Center, which is also home to the NBA’s Portland Trail Blazers.

In their first and only season, the Steel struggled to find their footing on the field. They finished with a record of 3-13 and missed the playoffs. However, the team did provide some exciting moments throughout the year, including a 48-47 victory over the Los Angeles Kiss in their home opener.

Off the field, the Steel were known for their community involvement. The team partnered with local organizations to give back to the community through initiatives such as youth football camps, charity drives, and visits to children’s hospitals.

Unfortunately, after just one season in the league, the Steel folded due to financial difficulties. While the team may have been short-lived, it left a lasting impact on the city of Portland.

The Steel brought arena football back to Portland after a decade-long absence. The city had previously been home to the Portland Forest Dragons, who played from 1997-1999 before relocating to Oklahoma City. The Steel reignited the passion for indoor football in the area and contributed to Portland’s rich sports culture.

Additionally, the Steel served as a platform for local talent to showcase their skills. Players such as quarterback Darron Thomas and receiver Nick Truesdell, who both had connections to the University of Oregon, were given opportunities to prove themselves at the professional level.

Overall, the Portland Steel may not have achieved significant success on the field, but the impact it had on the community and the sport cannot be overlooked. The team introduced arena football to a new generation of fans in Portland and gave local athletes the chance to pursue their dreams.
