Music History

The Pro Arte Quartet is a classical music ensemble that has been around for almost 100 years. It was founded in 1911 by Alphonse Onnou, a Belgian violist who was then teaching at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The quartet initially consisted of Onnou on viola, Germaine Thyssens-Valentin on piano, violinist Henrietta Petri and cellist Robert Maas.

One of the most interesting things about the Pro Arte Quartet is their connection to some of the most significant events in the history of classical music during the 20th century. For starters, they were the first major string quartet to tour extensively, having performed throughout Europe and the United States in the 1920s and 1930s.
