Music History

The Pro Arte Quartet is a classical music ensemble that has been around for almost 100 years. It was founded in 1911 by Alphonse Onnou, a Belgian violist who was then teaching at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The quartet initially consisted of Onnou on viola, Germaine Thyssens-Valentin on piano, violinist Henrietta Petri and cellist Robert Maas.

One of the most interesting things about the Pro Arte Quartet is their connection to some of the most significant events in the history of classical music during the 20th century. For starters, they were the first major string quartet to tour extensively, having performed throughout Europe and the United States in the 1920s and 1930s. They also had the distinction of being the first quartet-in-residence at an American university (University of Wisconsin-Madison) and the first musical ensemble to be broadcast live on radio.

However, what really sets the Pro Arte Quartet apart from other ensembles is their role in World War II and the aftermath of that conflict. During the Nazi occupation of Belgium in 1940, the quartet was touring in the United States and decided not to return home. Instead, they became the quartet-in-residence at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where they continued to perform and teach. They also gained US citizenship and officially became the first quartet-in-residence at an American university.

After the war ended, the Pro Arte Quartet returned to Belgium and resumed performing. However, they did not forget their experiences during the war, and in 1953 they established the Pro Arte Quartet Fund, which aims to promote classical music education and performance. This fund has helped many young musicians and ensembles pursue their dreams of performing classical music.

Throughout their long and illustrious career, the Pro Arte Quartet has helped to define and shape classical music. Their innovative approach to performance and their willingness to embrace new technologies have made them one of the most important ensembles in history. So whether you are a lover of classical music or simply someone who appreciates great artistry, the Pro Arte Quartet is definitely worth checking out!
