Professor Brian Cox is a world-renowned physicist and science communicator, famous for his work on the Large Hadron Collider and his numerous television appearances on programs such as "Wonders of the Solar System" and "The Infinite Monkey Cage". However, what many people might not know is that he has also had a strong connection to theater throughout his career.

Cox's interest in theater began during his time at the University of Manchester, where he studied physics and performed in several productions with the university's Drama Society. He even considered pursuing theater full-time before ultimately deciding to focus on his scientific career.

Despite this, Cox has continued to be involved in theater in various ways throughout his life. In 2010, he made his West End debut in a production of "Uncle Vanya" at the Vaudeville Theatre, starring alongside Ken Stott and Anna Friel. He played the role of Astrov, a disillusioned doctor who falls in love with the play's protagonist Yelena.

In an interview with The Guardian at the time, Cox spoke about how his experience in theater has influenced his approach to science communication. He said, "When you're playing a character on stage, you have to inhabit their ideas and beliefs completely – you can't judge them from the outside. And it's the same with science communication – you have to try to understand where your audience is coming from and what they already know, and then build on that understanding."

Cox has also been involved in numerous theatrical productions as a consultant or advisor. In 2011, he worked with director Nicholas Hytner on the National Theatre's production of "Collaborators", a play about the relationship between Soviet writer Mikhail Bulgakov and Joseph Stalin. Cox helped Hytner to accurately depict the science and technology of the era.

More recently, Cox was involved in the development of a play called "The Message", which premiered at the Manchester International Festival in 2019. The play, which was co-written by playwrights Margaret Atwood and Mike Bartlett, explored themes of communication and civilisation. Cox worked with the production team to ensure that the scientific concepts presented in the play were accurate and accessible to audiences.

In many ways, Cox's involvement in theater seems to be an extension of his broader interest in communicating science to the general public. Like many scientists, he recognises the importance of making complex ideas accessible and engaging for non-experts.
