Broadway shows have been a staple of American entertainment for over a century. From the classic musicals of Rodgers and Hammerstein to the modern smash hits like Hamilton, Broadway has always provided audiences with a powerful medium of storytelling that transcends barriers of race, culture, and socioeconomic background.

However, for many years, Broadway was not an inclusive industry. The casting of white actors in roles meant for people of color was a common practice, as was the exclusion of minorities from creative teams and production staff. But in recent times, there has been a push for change.

The issue of race on Broadway took center stage in the 2016 Tony Awards broadcast when Hamilton creator, Lin-Manuel Miranda, delivered a now-iconic acceptance speech directed towards then-Vice President elect, Mike Pence. Miranda acknowledged the racial and cultural diversity of his cast and celebrated the message of inclusion that Hamilton and other Broadway productions can deliver.

Hamilton is now widely regarded as a landmark moment in Broadway history, largely due to its diverse casting choices. Not only were people of color cast in roles originally played by white actors (such as Thomas Jefferson), but it also allowed non-white performers to play historical founding fathers and mothers, breaking down long-standing stereotypes about who gets to tell stories.

Aside from Hamilton, diverse casting has also become more prevalent on Broadway with shows like The Color Purple, Once on This Island, and Ain’t Too Proud: The Life and Times of the Temptations leading the way. It’s not just racial diversity being increased, however; there has also been an increase LGBTQIA+ representation, disability representation and a wide variety of intersectionality present on stages all over New York City.

But despite these positive changes, the Broadway industry still has work to do. In an article for The New York Times, writer Michael Paulson stated that while progress is being made, “it remains rare for shows by people of color, women or other underrepresented groups to obtain financial backing from commercial producers and investors.”

While there has been some progress, it’s clear that more needs to be done in ensuring that the creative teams and behind-the-scenes talent on Broadway is also diverse. Increasing diversity brings fresh and new perspectives into storytelling; as the world changes with every passing year, so must Broadway.

Also, the work does not end at casting either. The industry needs to ensure that shows with on-stage representations also have an accurate representation of a culture or experience. Again, using Hamilton as an example, while its diverse casting was groundbreaking, there were still some critics who felt that aspects of the show's portrayal of our founding fathers and mothers lacked a complete view.

In conclusion, race continues to play a significant role in Broadway shows. While progress has been made in expanding representation across various races, cultures, and genders, there remains much work to do in ensuring that this inclusivity also encompasses the talent contributing offstage and provides an authentic representation of different cultures and experiences represented in these productions. Until those goals are met, Broadway and the cultural conversation surrounding it will continue growing into something beautiful and reflective of the audience it serves.
