Robert McCormick was a distinguished artist, musician, and educator who made a significant impact on the world of classical music. Born in 1958, he grew up listening to his mother play piano and eventually began studying himself. His passion for classical music led him to become an accomplished percussionist, specializing in contemporary and experimental pieces.

McCormick earned his Bachelor's degree from the University of Arkansas and continued his studies at the Eastman School of Music, where he earned two Master's degrees and a Doctorate of Musical Arts in percussion performance. He went on to perform with numerous ensembles, including the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Lyric Opera of Chicago, and the St. Louis Symphony. As a soloist, he performed at Carnegie Hall and premiered many new works for percussion.

Aside from his performance career, McCormick was a respected educator. He taught at several universities, including the Eastman School of Music and the Boston Conservatory at Berklee. He was also involved in the Percussive Arts Society, serving as its President from 2009-2011 and leading numerous education initiatives.

One of McCormick's most notable contributions to the world of classical music was his advocacy for the marimba. He performed and recorded many works featuring the instrument, including John Psathas' "Souls" and Alejandro Viñao's "Khan Variations." He also commissioned new works for the marimba and collaborated with composers such as Steven Mackey, Charles Wuorinen, and Augusta Read Thomas.

McCormick's legacy in classical music is marked by his dedication not only to performance but also to education and innovation. Through his work with the marimba and other percussion instruments, he expanded the possibilities of classical music and inspired generations of musicians to come.
