The team was founded in 1967 as a member of the National Professional Soccer League (NPSL). They won the league championship in their first season, defeating the Atlanta Chiefs in the final. The following year, the NPSL merged with the United Soccer Association (USA) to form the North American Soccer League (NASL), and the Lancers became a member of this new league.
In their first season in the NASL, the Lancers finished as runners-up in the Eastern Division. They made the playoffs again in 1970 and 1971, but were eliminated in the first round both times. In 1976, they reached the conference finals before losing to the eventual champions, the Toronto Metros-Croatia.
Despite not winning any championships during their initial run in the NASL, the Lancers were known for fielding some top-class players. Randy Horton was one of the best goalscorers in the league during his time with the club, while Carlos Metidieri was a creative force in midfield.
After the NASL folded in 1984, the Lancers continued to play in various lower-tier leagues. They won a number of divisional titles in the USL and the National Premier Soccer League, but never managed to win another national championship.
In 2011, the Lancers were revived as an indoor soccer team in the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL). They played for eight seasons before the league folded in 2019. While indoor soccer is a different format to outdoor soccer, the Lancers still managed to achieve a certain level of success in this new era. They made the playoffs four times and reached the final once, losing to the Milwaukee Wave in 2013.
While the Rochester Lancers may not be one of the most well-known soccer teams in the United States, they have a rich history and legacy. They were pioneers of professional soccer in the country and played an important role in the early days of the sport. Whether on grass or on turf, the Lancers brought many exciting moments to fans throughout their existence.
