Roderick Cox is a talented conductor who has made waves in the classical music scene. Born and raised in Macon, Georgia, Cox showed an interest in music at an early age. He began playing the violin when he was four years old and continued to pursue his passion for music throughout his childhood.

Cox attended the University of Southern Mississippi, where he obtained a Bachelor of Music degree in violin performance. He went on to pursue graduate studies at Northwestern University and the Peabody Conservatory, where he earned a Master of Music degree and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree, respectively.

Throughout his career, Cox has gained recognition for his work as a conductor. He has worked with a number of prestigious orchestras, including the Minnesota Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, and the Berlin State Opera. In addition to conducting performances, Cox also regularly works with young musicians and serves as a mentor for up-and-coming talent.

What sets Cox apart from other conductors is his dedication to making classical music accessible to a wider audience. He strives to create engaging and inclusive music experiences that appeal to people from all backgrounds. In an interview with Classical MPR, Cox stated: “I hope [classical music] becomes part of everyone's daily ritual, like brushing your teeth or having a cup of coffee.”

To achieve this goal, Cox has worked to diversify the repertoire of composers performed by orchestras. He sees the inclusion of works by underrepresented composers as a way to broaden the appeal of classical music and bring new audiences into the fold. In 2021, Cox will become the music director of the Minnesota Orchestra's "Future Classics" program, which focuses on commissioning new works from emerging composers.

In addition to his musical achievements, Cox is also known for being a trailblazer. He is the first Black conductor to serve in a conducting position at the Minnesota Orchestra, a fact that he embraces as an opportunity to encourage diversity and inclusion in the classical music world.

Overall, Roderick Cox is an influential figure in the classical music scene. His dedication to accessibility, mentorship, and diversity has earned him widespread respect and admiration. Through his work as a conductor and his efforts to make classical music more inclusive, Cox is helping to shape the future of this timeless art form.
