Rohan De Silva is a celebrated classical pianist who has been dazzling audiences with his musical talents for decades. He is a virtuoso on the piano and has built an impressive international reputation for his performances in both solo and chamber music concerts.
Born in Colombo, Sri Lanka, on September 17, 1958, Rohan De Silva began studying piano at the age of six. His early training was under the guidance of the Russian-trained pianist Mary Billimoria, and he later went on to study at Andrews University in Michigan, United States.
De Silva has won numerous awards throughout his career, including first prize at the Eighth Yugoslavia National Piano Competition in 1984 and the William Petschek Recital Award in New York City in 1993. He has also performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Berliner Symphoniker, and the Rotterdam Philharmonic.
De Silva specializes in performing the works of composers of the late Classical period, such as Beethoven and Mozart, as well as composers of the Romantic era, such as Chopin and Schumann. While he has become known for his exciting and technically demanding repertoire, he is also renowned for his ability to create a special connection with his audience, making each performance a unique and unforgettable experience.
In addition to his solo concerts, De Silva collaborated regularly with the renowned violinist Itzhak Perlman from the 1990s until Perlman's retirement from touring in 2015. Together they toured extensively around the world, performing concerts that showcased their exceptional musicianship and artistry.
As a teacher, De Silva has been a professor at the Juilliard School of Music since 1995 and has coached many notable young pianists who have gone on to develop successful careers in the world of classical music.
