Rough Runner, the obstacle course event inspired by game shows such as Total Wipeout and Takeshi’s Castle, took over Manchester once again on 15th and 16th September 2017. Packed with challenges like human wrecking balls, spinning logs and a giant inflatable slide named travelator, the event lured hundreds of participants who were keen to test their limits and see if they had what it takes to become a Rough Runner.
At its core, Rough Runner is a test of fitness, bravery, teamwork, and determination. It's not just about navigating through obstacles and reaching the finish line - it's about confronting your fears, cheering each other on and pushing yourself beyond what you thought was possible.
The event kicked off at Heaton Park in Manchester, one of the largest parks in Europe. The venue provided an excellent backdrop for the event, with its beautiful gardens, woodlands, and lakeside views. Participants were required to run, jump, climb and crawl over and around a series of obstacles that were spread across the park. Some of the most challenging obstacles include Sweeper Arms, Big Balls, Leap of Faith, and Revolution. Each of the tests required different skills and tactics, ranging from speed to grip strength and balance.
Participants could choose from three distances: 5km, 10km or 15km. Each distance featured varying degrees of difficulty and obstacles, which meant that people of all fitness levels could take part if they wished to. The 5km course contained 10 obstacles; the 10km course included 15, while the 15km had 20 obstacles. In total, there were over 20 unique obstacles spread throughout the course.
What makes Rough Runner stand out from other obstacle course events is its focus on teamwork. Although it's a personal challenge, participants are encouraged to build relationships with their fellow runners and help each other complete the obstacles. This approach promotes a sense of camaraderie and community, turning Rough Runner Manchester 2017 into more than just an athletic event.
The overall winner of the race was James Dearing, who finished the 15km in an incredible time of 1 hour and 27 minutes. In second place was Ryan Whiteley, with Tom Sharp coming in third.
In conclusion, Rough Runner Manchester 2017 was a huge success, offering participants an opportunity to challenge their capabilities while also having fun. It provided a thrilling experience for both spectators and competitors alike, proving that sport doesn't have to be dull or serious to be enjoyable. We're already looking forward to next year's event and can't wait to see what new obstacles and challenges they'll throw our way!
