Palhares began his professional MMA career in 2004, fighting in small promotions in Brazil before eventually signing with the now-defunct International Fight League (IFL). He quickly gained attention for his impressive grappling abilities, winning his first six fights in the IFL all by submission.
In 2008, Palhares signed with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), where he fought in the middleweight division. He continued his impressive submission streak, finishing opponents with heel hooks and knee bars. However, it was his poor sportsmanship that caused him to become a controversial figure in the sport.
In 2010, during a fight with Tomasz Drwal at UFC 111, Palhares held onto a leg lock submission after the referee had already stopped the fight, causing Drwal to tap out in pain. The incident sparked outrage among fans, fighters, and UFC officials, leading to a temporary suspension for Palhares.
Palhares continued his questionable tactics in his next fight against Nate Marquardt at UFC Fight Night 22, once again holding onto a submission after his opponent had tapped out. This time, the UFC cut Palhares from their roster.
After leaving the UFC, Palhares continued to fight in other promotions around the world, including the World Series of Fighting and Professional Fighters League. Unfortunately, he continued to display unsportsmanlike conduct, including eye gouging and holding onto submissions too long.
In 2019, Palhares tested positive for banned substances and received a two-year suspension from MMA competition. As of July 2021, he has not fought since.
While Palhares may be remembered for his impressive grappling skills, his legacy in the MMA world is tainted by his poor sportsmanship and controversial tactics.
