When people think of college hockey, they might think of schools like Boston College or the University of Minnesota. However, there are over 80 colleges and universities across the country that have varsity hockey teams, and one of these teams is the Rutgers Scarlet Knights.

While Rutgers may be best known for its football and basketball programs, the Scarlet Knights hockey team has been gaining momentum in recent years. The team was established in 1994 as a club team but became a Division I varsity program in 2015. Since then, they have steadily improved each season, reaching new heights in the 2020-21 season.

The Scarlet Knights were led this season by captain Cole Caufield, a senior forward from Wisconsin who amassed 22 points in just 16 games. He was joined by fellow forward Tobias Olsson from Sweden, who also had an impressive season with 18 points in 17 games.

Despite COVID-related disruptions to their schedule, the Scarlet Knights managed to finish the regular season with a record of 9-6-2, securing themselves a spot in the Big Ten tournament. They ultimately lost in the first round of the tournament to the University of Notre Dame, but the season was still a success overall.

So, what sets Rutgers apart from other college hockey programs? For starters, the team plays in the Big Ten, which is widely regarded as the best conference in college hockey. They face tough opponents like Michigan, Penn State, and Wisconsin on a regular basis, providing plenty of opportunities for the players to grow and develop against top competition.

Additionally, unlike many college hockey programs, Rutgers is located in the Northeast, where hockey culture is strong. The state of New Jersey itself has produced numerous NHL players, including Kyle Palmieri and Johnny Gaudreau, so it's no surprise that the Scarlet Knights have been able to recruit talented players from the region.

Overall, Rutgers may not have the same storied history as some of its hockey counterparts, but the program is on the rise. With talented players and a commitment to playing in one of the nation's top conferences, the Scarlet Knights could soon become a force to be reckoned with in college hockey.
