Ryan McAdams is a celebrated conductor in the world of classical music today, and his unique approach towards this art form has made him stand out among his contemporaries. Born in Wisconsin, United States, Ryan began his musical career as a percussionist, which played an instrumental role in shaping his understanding of music as a whole.
Ryan’s musical journey truly began when he started taking conducting lessons with David Zinman at the Aspen Music Festival. After completing his Bachelor's degree in Percussion Performance from Lawrence University, Ryan went on to complete his Masters in Orchestral Conducting from the Juilliard School, where he studied under Alan Gilbert. He is also a recipient of the Bruno Walter Conducting Scholarship and has been a conducting fellow of the American Academy of Conductors.
As a conductor, Ryan's performances have been hailed for their precision, musicality and sensitivity. His expertise in contemporary classical music has been especially appreciated, having conducted works by premier composers like John Adams, Missy Mazzoli, and Nico Muhly. Ryan has also worked closely with some of the most prestigious orchestras in Europe, including the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, and others.
One of the highlights of Ryan’s musical career was his appointment as the Music Director of the New York Youth Symphony, a prestigious position which saw him work with some of the brightest young musicians across America. During his tenure, Ryan introduced innovative programming that featured modern compositions as well as lesser-known masterpieces from the repertoire of classical music. Through his work with the NYYS, Ryan encouraged young musicians to explore the vast world of classical music and helped nurture the future of classical music talent.
Today, Ryan continues to contribute significantly to the world of classical music. He is widely respected for his skill in balancing contemporary music with classical repertoires, and for his ability to create extraordinary music experiences for everyone – from seasoned connoisseurs to newcomers alike.
