Cocoanut Grove was once a popular event venue located in Boston, Massachusetts. It was known for its lavish decorations, great seating arrangements and trendy lighting that made it perfect for hosting an array of events from concerts to weddings.
Built in 1927, the Cocoanut Grove was initially meant to be a speakeasy during prohibition era but quickly became one of the most famous nightclubs in Boston. Over the years, it has hosted some of the biggest names in music and other entertainment like Frank Sinatra, Duke Ellington, and Nat King Cole among others. The club also featured impressive interior designs that were complemented by multicolored lighting.
Aside from its hospitality, Cocoanut Grove became renown for its state-of-the-art sound system that provided clear sound quality throughout the ballroom ensuring that guests experienced nothing short of excellent performances. It had different spaces including multi-level rooftop dining terraces which could accommodate up to 2,000 guests.
Unfortunately, the club met a tragic end when it caught fire on November 28th, 1942, claiming over 490 lives, making it one of the deadliest nightclub fires in history. Although the root cause of the fire is still unknown, investigations revealed that several factors contributed to the disaster, including flammable furnishings and poor safety measures.
