The stadium was built right after World War II and dedicated on October 1, 1948 to the memory of Ernest Fleetwood Ladd (1876-1941). The first game was played October 2,1948 (Alabama vs. Vanderbilt). Seating capacity is 40, 646. The stadium is located at 1621 Virginia Street on approximately 45 acres of land. It is the fourth largest stadium in the State of Alabama and the largest outdoor facility on the Gulf Coast from Tallahassee, Florida to New Orleans, Louisiana. The stadium is fully illuminated for night time use with six 120 foot towers each with twenty 1,500 watt bulbs. The parking lot is lit with spaces for 4,000 cars, we offer concession stands, in-house security and ticket operation available, etc. Mobile's market population is approximately 365,000. The stadium is one of the City of Mobile's most valuable assets. It is debt free and has a replacement value estimated at approximately 50 million dollars. The facility gives the area the ability to host major outdoor events including the Senior Bowl, the Alabama vs. Mississippi All-Star Classic, the Annual Gulf Coast Classic with Alabama State University and new on the roster is the GMAC Bowl.
