Mosley was born on September 7, 1971, in Lynwood, California. He grew up in a boxing family, with both his father and grandfather being professional fighters. Despite this, Mosley initially pursued a career in football, playing at Pomona High School and Mt. San Antonio College. However, it wasn't long before he realized that boxing was his true calling.
Mosley made his professional debut in February 1993, starting off with a series of impressive knockouts. In just his 11th fight, he captured the IBF lightweight title from Phillip Holiday. Over the next few years, Mosley went on to defend the title nine times, establishing himself as one of the top fighters in the division.
In 2000, Mosley moved up to welterweight and took on Oscar De La Hoya, then the reigning WBC champion. The bout was highly anticipated, with both men being undefeated champions at the time. Mosley pulled off an upset victory, knocking out De La Hoya in the 12th round. He went on to defend the title twice before losing to Vernon Forrest in 2002.
Mosley rebounded in 2003, defeating Forrest in a rematch to recapture the WBC welterweight title. This set up another high-profile fight against De La Hoya in 2004, which ended in a controversial split decision loss for Mosley. He continued to fight at a high level, winning the WBA light middleweight title in 2010 and challenging some of the biggest names in boxing, such as Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao.
Throughout his career, Mosley was known for his speed and power, as well as his ability to adapt to different opponents. He was also highly respected for his sportsmanship and professionalism, both in and out of the ring. In recognition of his accomplishments, Mosley was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2020.
