The history of the Shawinigan Cataractes dates back to 1969, when they became a member of the Quebec Junior Hockey League. The team was initially named "Braves de Shawinigan-Sud" but changed its name to the current one in 1973. Since then, they have been known for their excellent performance and their commitment to developing young talent.
The Shawinigan Cataractes have won three Memorial Cup Championships, which is awarded to the best junior ice hockey team in Canada. They achieved this in 1971, 1973, and 2012. Additionally, the team has reached the final of the tournament five times in total.
