Over the years, the Siena Saints have made some impressive achievements in women's college basketball. For instance, they've won numerous Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) regular-season titles and have qualified for the NCAA Tournament six times.
The Saints have also put some tremendous talents on display throughout their history. One such player was Liza Gallo, who scored a remarkable 2,327 points during her time at the school. Additionally, gunner Phyllis Mangina carved her name in the record books during the late 1970s, scoring an average of 27.7 points per game.
In recent years, the Saints have had their fair share of highs and lows. After qualifying for March Madness in the 2001-02 season, Siena went through an extended period of struggling on the court, often finishing low in the MAAC standings. This poor form led to the dismissal of head coach Gina Castelli in 2012.
However, in 2015, things started looking up for the Saints when Ali Jaques was appointed as the new head coach. She led the program to its first winning record since 2001-02 in her debut season. Under her guidance, the Saints have continued to make progress towards becoming a force to be reckoned with in women's college basketball.
Defensively, the Siena team has shown considerable growth under Jaques. This season alone, they're holding opponents to just a 34.6% field goal percentage and less than 60 points per game. Moreover, freshman point guard Rayshel Brown has turned heads with her impressive performances, averaging around 14 points per game.
Though the Saints may not be a household name for mainstream college basketball fans, they're undoubtedly a program to watch out for in terms of women's basketball. With a talented squad and an experienced head coach, the Siena Saints are poised to continue making waves in the years to come.
