Sigourney Weaver is known for her adventurous and diverse film roles, from the science fiction classic “Alien” to the box office hit “Avatar.” Although she has achieved numerous accolades and success in Hollywood, Sigourney Weaver also has a significant history in theater.

Born Susan Alexandra Weaver in New York City in 1949, Sigourney was raised in a creative household. Her mother was an actress, while her father was a television executive. With exposure to the arts at an early age, it’s no surprise that Sigourney Weaver went on to study theater at Stanford University, followed by studies at Yale School of Drama.

After completing her studies, Weaver landed her first role in the off-Broadway production of “Watergate Classics,” and later her Broadway debut in the play “The Constant Wife.” In the mid-1970s, she even worked as a regular understudy for the legendary stage actress Meryl Streep in the Broadway production of “Secret Service.”

However, Sigourney’s breakout stage performance came in 1984 when she starred in “Hurlyburly” off-Broadway, which earned her praise for her portrayal of the conflicted character Darlene. The play was also adapted into a movie in 1998, with Sean Penn taking on the lead role that Sigourney had played on stage over a decade earlier.

Throughout her career, Sigourney has continued to balance her love for both film and theater. She received Tony Award nominations for her performances in Broadway productions, including “Sex and Longing” in 1996 and “The Mercy Seat” in 2003.

In 2009, the Off-Broadway production of “Love and Divorce and Mississippi Style” saw Sigourney take on double-duty by playing dual roles in the poignant play. Though the production was only staged for a brief run of 12 performances, Sigourney made the most of the opportunity to return to the theater after a short hiatus.

Sigourney’s passion for theater extends beyond performing and into the realms of directing, too. She directed her first play, “The Guys,” in New York City just months after 9/11. The play explores the aftermath of the tragedy through the eyes of a fire chief, and Sigourney even starred in its film adaptation with Anthony LaPaglia.

In an interview with The Guardian in 2019, Sigourney Weaver explained how important theater continues to be for her:

"Theater is always the barometer for everything else. It will still be here when everything else has gone away. I am grateful it's not going to disappear. Because there's nothing like, for an actor or a writer, those few weeks where you're putting something on that no one has ever seen before."

Sigourney has come a long way since her early days as a college student, but her passion for theater has never faltered. Her extensive background as a stage actress, director, and playwright is a testament to her multifaceted talent and dedication to the arts.
