Skylab was a space station launched by NASA in 1973 and remained in orbit for six years until it reentered the Earth's atmosphere and burned up in 1979. During its time in space, Skylab conducted a number of scientific experiments and observations to further our understanding of space and life in zero gravity conditions.

But what does Skylab have to do with concerts? Well, quite a bit actually. In 1974, just one year after Skylab's launch, the first concert ever broadcast live from space was performed by country singer Charlie Rich. The performance was part of a Fourth of July celebration organized by ABC Television, and it was transmitted via satellite to viewers in the United States.

Rich wasn't actually in space himself – he performed on the ground at the Houston Astrodome – but Skylab astronauts were able to view the concert in real-time from space thanks to the satellite transmission. It's hard to imagine now, in an age where we can stream entire concerts from our phones, but at the time this was a groundbreaking achievement and captured the public's imagination.

There were other links between Skylab and music during its time in orbit as well. Astronauts on board Skylab would listen to music on cassette tapes to help pass the time between experiments. According to Skylab astronaut Owen K. Garriott, the crew had a diverse range of musical tastes, listening to everything from classical music to rock and roll.

In fact, Garriott himself is notable for being the first person to play a musical instrument in space. During the Skylab 3 mission, he brought along a flute and recorded himself playing several pieces while in orbit. The recordings were later released as an album titled "Music from Earth-Routledge Companion to Spaceflight."

While Skylab's impact on music and concerts was relatively minor compared to its scientific achievements, it's interesting to reflect on how the space program has influenced and intersected with pop culture throughout history. From the moon landing to the Space Shuttle program, NASA has captured the public's imagination in countless ways over the decades. Who knows what musical milestones we might achieve as we continue to explore space in the future?
