In the 2020-2021 season, the Thunderbirds finished with an impressive record of 20-4. They were crowned champions of the Big Sky Conference and secured their spot in the NCAA Tournament. Although they did not advance past the first round, this experience only further fueled their determination for success.
Under the leadership of head coach Tracy Sanders, the Thunderbirds have steadily improved each year. In her four seasons at the helm, she has compiled a record of 71-43 and led the team to two conference championships. Her coaching style emphasizes defense and the development of a team-first mentality.
One player who embodies this mindset is senior guard Rebecca Cardenas. She was named the Big Sky Defensive Player of the Year in the 2020-2021 season while averaging 13 points and six rebounds per game. Her all-around play and leadership on and off the court have made her a fan favorite and a vital part of the Thunderbirds’ success.
Another key player for the Thunderbirds is sophomore forward Liz Graves. In just her second year, she led the team in scoring and rebounding, averaging 14 points and eight rebounds per game. Her ability to dominate inside and out has made her one of the top young players in the conference.
The Thunderbirds’ success is not limited to just the court. They also excel in the classroom, boasting a team GPA of 3.62. This dedication to academics is just another example of the well-rounded and disciplined approach that Coach Sanders instills in her players.
As the Thunderbirds head into the 2021-2022 season, expectations are high. With the majority of their core returning, they have all the pieces in place to make another run at the conference title and beyond. Southern Utah Women’s Basketball has risen to become a dominant force in the Big Sky Conference, and they look determined to stay there.
