The Spiral Stakes is a thoroughbred horse race that takes place annually at the Turfway Park racetrack in Florence, Kentucky. It is a Grade 2 stakes race that serves as an important prep race for the Kentucky Derby.

The Spiral Stakes was first held in 1972 under the name the Spiral Stakes Handicap. It was originally a nine-furlong race before being changed to its current distance of 1 1/8 miles in 1982. The race has undergone several name changes over the years, including the Jim Beam Stakes and the Lane's End Stakes, before returning to the name Spiral Stakes in 2012.

The race got its name from the spiral-shaped ramp that jockeys use to enter the track. The Spiral Stakes is traditionally held on the last Saturday of March and is run on an artificial Polytrack surface.

Winning the Spiral Stakes carries 50 qualification points towards the Kentucky Derby, making it a crucial race for three-year-old horses looking to make their way into the Run for the Roses. In fact, several horses have used the Spiral Stakes as a stepping stone to success in the Kentucky Derby, most notably Animal Kingdom who won the Spiral Stakes in 2011 before going on to win the Kentucky Derby that same year.

Other notable winners of the Spiral Stakes include Spirited Boy in 1979, Broad Brush in 1986, Hansel in 1991, A.P. Indy in 1992, Serena's Song in 1995, and Ruler of the World in 2013.

In addition to the Spiral Stakes, Turfway Park also hosts the Bourbonette Oaks, a Grade 3 filly race, on the same day. The Bourbonette Oaks is also an important prep race for the Kentucky Oaks, the premiere race for three-year-old fillies.

Overall, the Spiral Stakes is an important race in the world of horse racing. It provides a crucial stepping stone for horses on their way to the Kentucky Derby and has given rise to several successful horses over the years. Horse racing fans can look forward to this annual event with anticipation, knowing that some of the best young horses in the sport will be competing for glory on the track.
