This year's gala featured a number of awards, including Male, Female, and Junior Athlete of the Year, Coach of the Year, Team of the Year, and a number of additional awards recognizing excellence, leadership, and contributions to sport.
Among the highlights of this year's gala was the recognition of wheelchair racer Brent Lakatos as Male Athlete of the Year. Lakatos won five gold medals at the 2019 IPC World Championships, breaking the world record in the T53 800m race and becoming the first Canadian to win four golds in a single Paralympic Games or World Championship event.
Meanwhile, rower Hillary Janssens was named Female Athlete of the Year after winning gold at the 2019 World Rowing Championships in the women's coxless pairs with teammate Caileigh Filmer.
Other notable winners included the UBC Thunderbirds Women’s Volleyball Team, who were named Team of the Year after winning their third straight U Sports national championship in 2019.
