St. John's University has a longstanding history of producing some of college baseball's greatest players. As one of the top programs in the Northeast, the Red Storm have proven time and again that they are a force to be reckoned with on the diamond.

A brief history of St. John's baseball

St. John's baseball was established in 1895 and has been a part of the university's athletic program ever since. The team has played at several different locations throughout its history, including its current home field, Jack Kaiser Stadium, which was built in 2004.

Over the years, the Red Storm have enjoyed numerous successes, including winning conference championships, reaching the College World Series, and producing Major League Baseball (MLB) players.

Some notable MLB players who attended St. John's include:

- Frank Viola, a former pitcher who won the Cy Young Award in 1988
- John Franco, a former left-handed pitcher who played 21 seasons in the MLB and was inducted into the New York Mets Hall of Fame
- Craig Biggio, a former second baseman and catcher for the Houston Astros who was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2015

Recent success

In recent years, St. John's has continued to build upon its rich baseball legacy. In 2018, the team won the Big East Conference championship and advanced to the NCAA Baseball Tournament for the first time since 2012.

Under the leadership of Head Coach Ed Blankmeyer, who has been with the program since 1996, the Red Storm has become a perennial contender and has produced numerous standout players.

One such player is right-handed pitcher Sean Mooney, who was named the Big East Pitcher of the Year in 2019. Mooney was drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the eighth round of the 2019 MLB Draft.

Another standout player is outfielder Mike Antico, who transferred to St. John's from the University of Texas. Antico had a standout 2021 season, leading the Red Storm in several offensive categories and being named a finalist for the Brooks Wallace Award, which is given annually to the nation's top shortstop.

Future prospects

St. John's baseball has a bright future ahead of it. The team is set to return several key players for the 2022 season, including pitcher Nick Mondak, who was named a First-Team All-Big East selection in 2021.

The Red Storm has also landed several highly touted recruits, including infielder Joe Wozny, who was ranked as the No. 7 recruit in the Northeast by Prep Baseball Report.

As the program continues to attract top talent and produce successful teams, there is no doubt that St. John's baseball will remain a fixture in the world of college baseball and continue to churn out talented players who go on to compete at the highest level.
