St. Louis has had a long and proud history in the world of tennis, with its very own professional franchise – the St. Louis Aces – having competed in the World TeamTennis league for over a decade.

Founded in 1994, the Aces were one of the inaugural members of World TeamTennis (WTT) and played their home games at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center in Forest Park. They quickly became one of the most successful teams in the league, winning the WTT Championship in 1996, their third year of existence.

The Aces boasted some of the biggest names in both men’s and women’s tennis throughout their history, with stars such as Martina Navratilova, Andy Roddick, Venus Williams, James Blake, Anna Kournikova, and Melanie Oudin all representing the team at some point during their careers.

With a focus on fast-paced, high-energy tennis that appeals to both casual fans and hardcore enthusiasts alike, World TeamTennis has proven to be a popular alternative to traditional professional tennis events. Featuring a unique format that includes mixed-doubles matches, no ad scoring, and power points, WTT provides a level of excitement and unpredictability that is sure to keep viewers on the edge of their seats.

After more than a decade of thrilling fans in St. Louis and around the country, the Aces unfortunately ceased operations in 2010 due to financial difficulties. However, their legacy lives on as they paved the way for other successful WTT franchises like the New York Empire, Orange County Breakers, and San Diego Aviators.

While there may not currently be a professional tennis team in the city, St. Louis continues to be a hotbed for the sport at the amateur level. The area features numerous tennis clubs and facilities, including the aforementioned Dwight Davis Tennis Center, and hosts several high-profile tournaments each year.

Whether it's spectating at the U.S. Open or playing a quick game with friends, tennis remains an important part of the sporting landscape in St. Louis. And while we may not have the Aces anymore, their success and influence on the sport can still be felt throughout the city and beyond.
