The Spires field teams in eight varsity sports: men's and women's basketball, soccer, cross country, track and field, volleyball, and cheerleading. The teams compete in the Heartland Conference for most sports, while the basketball teams play in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
One of the most successful programs at St. Marys is the women's basketball team. They have won two NAIA Division II National Championships (1994, 2012) and have been to the NAIA Final Four eight times. Their success includes two undefeated regular seasons and an NAIA record of 71 straight wins. In addition, they have produced several All-Americans and even a few players who went on to play professionally overseas.
The men's basketball team has also had its share of success, with seven appearances in the NAIA national tournament and two conference championships. The other team with multiple conference championships is men's soccer, which has won five Heartland Conference titles.
Both cross country teams have consistently been near the top of the conference and region, and the track and field teams have sent athletes to the national championships.
While the Spires' athletic program does not offer football, it is notable that one of the school's most famous alumni is Pro Football Hall of Fame member Emmitt Thomas, who played for the Kansas City Chiefs and coached for several NFL teams.
The Spires' cheerleading team performs at both men's and women's basketball games, as well as special events like pep rallies and homecoming. The team has won several national championships in cheerleading competitions.
While St. Marys may not be a hub of sports activity, the Spires' success is impressive and stands as a testament to the school's commitment to excellence on and off the field.
