Steven Galloway is a Canadian novelist, poet, and professor. Though he’s primarily known for his work in fiction, Galloway has also made a significant contribution to the world of theater.

Born in Vancouver in 1975, Galloway first became interested in writing through his high school drama classes. He went on to study creative writing at the University of British Columbia, where he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1998 and a Master of Fine Arts degree in 2001. During his time at UBC, Galloway developed an interest in playwriting, and began to write and produce his own plays.

Galloway’s first major play was titled "The End of the World", which premiered at the UBC Theatre in 1997. The play follows a group of characters as they attempt to come to terms with the end of the world. It was well-received by both audiences and critics, and helped to launch Galloway’s career as a playwright.

Since then, Galloway has written several other plays, including "Ascension", "After Eden", and "Bottle Tree". Many of these works have been performed across Canada and internationally, showcasing Galloway’s ability to craft compelling stories for the stage.

Perhaps one of Galloway’s most notable contributions to theater is his work on two collaborative projects that blend theater with multimedia: "The Last Great Circus" and "Theatre Configuration".

"The Last Great Circus" was a joint effort between Galloway and artist Mark Haney. The production featured live actors alongside projected animations and audio, leading audience members on a surreal journey through a mythical circus. The production was highly innovative for its time, earning rave reviews and cementing Galloway’s reputation as an innovator in Canadian theater.

Similarly, "Theatre Configuration" saw Galloway working with photographer Kevin Day and choreographer Crystal Pite to create a multimedia performance piece that used dance, photography, and spoken word to explore themes of identity and social roles. The resulting production was an immersive and deeply thought-provoking experience.

While Galloway has since shifted his focus primarily to fiction writing, his contributions to the world of Canadian theater remain significant. From his early plays to his innovative multimedia productions, Galloway’s work has helped to expand the boundaries of what theater can be and highlighted the immense talent present in Canada’s artistic community.
