Submission Underground was founded by former UFC fighter Chael Sonnen in 2016. Since then, it has become a platform for some of the world’s best grapplers to showcase their skills in submission-only matches and add an extra layer of excitement with a unique rule set.
Unlike traditional submission grappling competitions, Submission Underground features a modified ruleset. Matches are contested on a circular mat and there is no limit to how long a match can go. If neither competitor submits the other within the time limit, the match goes to overtime where competitors alternate starting positions until one person submits the other. Additionally, slams are legal except for when an opponent is locked in a submission or they are standing in the referee's raised hand position.
The event has quickly gained popularity due to high-level competitors from various disciplines participating, including several mixed martial artists. Many fighters have used Submission Underground as a way to stay active in between fights, improve their grappling skills, or even test themselves against other elite competitors in the same field.
Some notable MMA fighters who have competed in Submission Underground include Jon Jones, Dillon Danis, Jake Shields, and Ryan Bader, among others.
