The Swift Current Broncos are a Canadian junior ice hockey team based in Swift Current, Saskatchewan. The team competes in the Western Hockey League (WHL), one of three major leagues that make up the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) system. Since its inception in 1967, the Broncos have been a prominent fixture in the Saskatchewan hockey community and have produced numerous NHL players over the years.

The Broncos' roots date back to the founding of the WHL itself, which was established as a rival to the existing Junior A leagues across Canada. In their inaugural season, the Broncos finished with a respectable 24-36-6 record, and quickly became known for their tenacity on the ice. But it wasn't until the 1980s that the Broncos really took off, thanks in large part to two legendary figures: Graham James and Joe Sakic.

James, who would later become infamous for his crimes against young players while coaching in other leagues, built a powerhouse team in Swift Current during his four seasons there from 1985-1989. The Broncos won the WHL championship twice under James, in 1989 and 1993, and reached the Memorial Cup final both times. They won the title in 1989, thanks in part to the heroics of a young Sakic, who scored a hat trick in the championship game. Sakic would go on to play 21 seasons in the NHL, mostly with the Quebec Nordiques/Colorado Avalanche franchise, and is now enshrined in the Hall of Fame.

While the Broncos have not won another league championship since 1993, they have remained a respected organization in the WHL. They have produced several more NHL players, including Tyler Steenbergen, Braden Holtby, and Joni Ortio, and have regularly made the playoffs in recent years. In 2018, the Broncos suffered a tragedy when their bus was involved in a fatal accident while traveling to a playoff game. Four players were killed in the crash, and the team rallied around the surviving members to finish out the postseason with a remarkable run to the WHL final.

Today, the Broncos are still an important part of the hockey landscape in Saskatchewan. They play their home games at the Innovation Credit Union i-Plex, which seats just over 2,500 fans. The team is owned by the Swift Current Broncos Hockey Club, which is run by a group of local businessmen. While they may not have the same star power as some of the bigger teams in the CHL, the Broncos continue to represent the heart and soul of the Western Canadian hockey scene, and will always be remembered for the moments of triumph and tragedy that have defined their history.
