Sy Arden, also known as Sylvia Arditi, was an American playwright and producer who was active in the theater world in the early to mid-twentieth century. She wrote numerous plays, produced and directed productions, and worked with some of the biggest names in theater at the time.

Arden's career in theater began in the 1920s when she started writing plays. Her first production, "Roly Poly," was produced in 1925 and starred popular stage actress Ina Claire. The play was a hit and ran for over 200 performances. This success led to more productions, including "The Queen's Husband" and "The Bride of Torozko," both of which were Broadway hits.

In addition to writing plays, Arden also produced and directed many productions. She worked with notable actors such as Tallulah Bankhead, Ethel Barrymore, and Helen Hayes. Arden collaborated with writer Maurice Maeterlinck on his play "Sister Beatrice," which she produced on Broadway in 1929. The production starred Maureen O'Sullivan and was a critical success.

One of Arden's most enduring works is the play "Bad Girl." The play was adapted from a novel by Vina Delmar and tells the story of a young woman named Dot who falls in love with a man named Eddie. The play deals with issues such as sex, pregnancy, and abortion, and was controversial at the time of its production in 1930. Despite the controversy, the play was a commercial success and was later adapted into a film.

In the 1930s and 1940s, Arden continued to write and produce plays, including "A Marriage Has Been Arranged," which starred Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne, and "Without Love," which starred Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy. However, her output slowed down in the 1950s before she eventually retired from theater altogether.

Arden's contributions to theater were significant. She wrote plays that broke new ground in terms of subject matter and dealt with taboo subjects. She also worked with some of the biggest names in theater and helped guide their careers. While she may not be as well-known today as some of her contemporaries, her impact on the theater world is still felt today.
