Team Japan in Relation to Hockey: The Developing Story

When the Japanese women's hockey team entered as an extra, 8th team in the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, they became more than just a footnote in the tournament. Their relatively inexperience on the world stage was highlighted, and they took some heavy losses, but it marked an important first step in what is becoming a growing interest in hockey in Japan.

Japan has never qualified for the men's hockey tournament at the Winter Olympics, and the women's team had only made an appearance prior to 2018, back in 1998 in Nagano, where they finished fourth. But the goal now is for both teams to become competitive, and even medal contenders in years to come.

To do so, it will likely require a huge investment in infrastructure and funding. The population of Japan is approximately 127 million, and many people don't know what hockey is, or they've never seen a game. Although there are currently about 32,000 registered players in Japan, the number is still far too low compared to other nations with long traditions in the sport.

However, there are reasons for optimism. In August 2020, the NHL announced plans to hold exhibition games in Japan during the preseason in 2022 and onwards, which could help increase visibility and interest in the sport. Also, in 2017, the Ishinomaki Sharks, a pro ice hockey team, launched in northern Japan, providing more opportunities for young players to see firsthand what elite-level hockey looks like.

Furthermore, earlier this year Masato Domeki, a former Tohoku Free Blades player and current San Francisco Bulls assistant coach, started a project called Hockey Challenge NIIGATA, setting up an ECHL team in Niigata, with the aim of linking the US pro organization to Japan's amateur scene.

There’s still plenty of work to do, but all of these developments suggest that the sport is capable of growing in Japan, and that the national teams could one day soon be regular contenders on the Olympic hockey stage. Only time will tell where this story leads, but for now it's exciting to watch it unfold.
