The Acting Company is a nonprofit theatrical organization that was founded in 1972 by John Houseman and Margot Harley. The company’s mission is to bring classical theater to audiences across the United States, especially to those who have limited access to professional theater productions.

Over its nearly five-decade history, The Acting Company has produced over 130 plays and performed in 48 states as well as internationally. The company has also launched many successful careers in Hollywood and on Broadway, including Kevin Kline, Patti LuPone, and David Ogden Stiers.

The Acting Company has an important role in the world of theater both as a production company and as a training ground for young actors. For many years, the company has offered a highly competitive apprenticeship program for aspiring actors. The program provides intensive training in classical acting and offers opportunities for apprentices to work alongside some of the best actors and directors in the industry.

Aside from providing valuable training, The Acting Company has also made significant contributions to the world of theater through its productions. The company is known for producing thought-provoking and powerful renditions of classic plays such as William Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” and Arthur Miller’s “The Crucible.” They have also tackled more contemporary works like “The Grapes of Wrath” and “Of Mice and Men.”

The Acting Company is unique in that it not only provides high-quality theater productions, but it also focuses on engaging communities that might not have access to theater otherwise. The company regularly tours to rural areas, inner cities, and other underserved communities. It is committed to promoting arts education by providing workshops and partnering with schools and other educational programs.

Overall, The Acting Company has played a vital role in keeping live theater relevant and accessible to a wide audience. Its mission to uphold the value of classic theater while also expanding artistic accessibility to all fulfills a necessary duty to the world of theater. As they approach their 50th year, the Acting Company will inevitably continue to foster a new generation of theatrical enthusiasts and provide work that showcases the importance of classical theater in everyday lifes.
