The Graduate is a novel written by Charles Webb in 1963, which was adapted into a film in 1967. The story follows Benjamin Braddock, a recent college graduate who is unsure of what he wants to do with his life. Through the course of the novel, he becomes involved in an affair with Mrs. Robinson, the wife of his father's business partner. The Graduate has since become a cultural icon and has been referenced in numerous Broadway shows.

One of the most famous references to The Graduate on Broadway is in the musical adaptation of Legally Blonde. In the song "What You Want," protagonist Elle Woods sings about wanting to go to Harvard Law School, just like her crush Warner Huntington III. She mentions how Warner's father attended Harvard, but "that was way back when / Trust me, sweetie, I'm tellin' ya / It's not like in the movies / Where brilliant scholars / Stride up to the ivy-covered walls / Ivory towers, lofts and halls / And then come sliding down lamé-lined waterfalls." Elle imagines herself as Mrs. Robinson seducing Benjamin Braddock, before snapping out of her fantasy and resuming her pursuit of a law degree.

Another Broadway reference to The Graduate comes from The Book of Mormon. In one scene, Elder McKinley sings a song entitled "Turn it Off," in which he shares advice on how to suppress one's feelings and avoid thoughts that might cause shame or discomfort. He tells his fellow missionaries to "like the man you are today / turn off those feelings / Like a light switch / just go click / it's a cool little Mormon trick."

This line is a direct allusion to a scene in The Graduate where Mr. Robinson offers Benjamin some “advice” on how to be successful in business: "I have only one word to say to you...plastics. There's a great future in plastics."

The Graduate is also referenced in the show Heathers, during a song called "My Dead Gay Son." The parents of two deceased students sing about how they wish their sons were more like the ideal high school athlete. They lament, "I'd rather see them dead / than to have you lose your faculty position," and encourage their fellow parents to focus on their children's accomplishments. In reference to Benjamin Braddock's confusion about his future, they sing: "They'll call you a hero / or a vandal or a thief / But if it doesn’t matter to ya / you’ll be an actor on TV."

Overall, The Graduate has had a profound impact on American pop culture, including Broadway shows. It serves as a reminder of the challenges that recent college graduates face, as well as the timeless presence of mental health struggles. As these musicals point out, sometimes we need to get over our preconceptions to embrace the weirdness and chaos of life.
