When it comes to comedy, The League is a show that definitely doesn’t hold back. This FX series first aired in 2009 and ran for seven seasons, following the lives of six friends who are part of a fantasy football league.

It’s not just the ridiculous antics these characters get up to that make The League so successful as a comedy show—it’s how committed the actors and writers are to pushing boundaries and taking risks.

One way The League achieves its comedic success is through its strong commitment to improvisation. According to co-creator and executive producer Jeff Schaffer, “75% of the show is improv.” Since each episode is largely unscripted, the actors have more opportunity to explore the humorous potential of each scene.

This also allows for a more authentic and unfiltered type of humor. When the actors can ad lib their lines, they’re able to be themselves and react in the moment rather than simply reciting tired slaptstick gags or clichéd one-liners.

Another way The League stands out in the comedy world is its use of extreme situations and edgy humor. With sex jokes, jokes about race, and other uncomfortable topics, this show focuses on taboo subjects that many other comedies sidestep.

While some may find The League’s humor offensive or inappropriate, the show has always been transparent about its intentions. In a 2015 interview with Variety, Schaffer explained that the point of the show was to push limits: “We want to be offensive and go places no one else will.”

The League also shines as a comedy because it never fails to keep things fresh. With each new season, the showrunners would introduce new running gags and recurring characters, making sure that viewers were never bored.

For example, Taco, played by Jon Lajoie, starts off as simply a stoner and a doofus but quickly becomes a breakout character thanks to his love of music and bizarre habits. Meanwhile, Rafi, played by Jason Mantzoukas, becomes a fan-favorite for his total lack of social boundaries.

Despite The League’s use of taboo humor and improvisation, it also has heart. For all their ridiculous squabbles over fantasy football, these characters ultimately care about each other. They may talk a big game, but they’re not afraid to show support or affection when needed.

All in all, The League is an outstanding example of how comedy can be fresh, daring and sincere all at once. It’s certainly not a show for everyone, but those who “get it” will find themselves laughing out loud again and again.
