On Sunday 11th June, thousands of men gathered in London’s Trafalgar Square for the first ever March for Men event. The aim of the march was to raise awareness about prostate cancer, a disease which affects one in eight men in the UK. The event, organized by Prostate Cancer UK, saw people from all backgrounds and walks of life come together with a common goal – to beat prostate cancer.

The timing of the event was particularly significant, as it coincided with the start of the international football tournament, the Confederations Cup. For many sports fans, this is a time to celebrate the sport and cheer on their national team. However, it also presents an opportunity to highlight important issues affecting men’s health, such as prostate cancer.

Many professional football clubs have shown their support for the cause, with players and coaching staff taking part in the march and spreading awareness on social media. Some clubs even changed their insignia to include the Prostate Cancer UK logo to show their solidarity.

The sport industry plays a key role in promoting health and wellbeing, and events like the March for Men provide an opportunity to emphasise the importance of men’s health. With so much media attention around the Confederations Cup, it is key that we seize this opportunity to reach out to millions of sports fans and make them aware of the risks associated with prostate cancer.

Of course, it’s not just about football. Other sports can play a critical role in raising awareness and funds for this vital cause. For example, rugby league has been particularly active in supporting Prostate Cancer UK, with many clubs participating in fundraising activities and donating matchday revenue to the charity.

This year’s march saw people travel from far and wide to take part, with many sporting legends joining the crowd. England rugby union player James Haskell, former England cricket captain Michael Vaughan, and ex-footballer and manager Lawrie McMenemy were among those marching alongside the thousands of other participants.

The march was a huge success, with participants raising over £400,000 for Prostate Cancer UK. This will go towards vital research, support services and awareness campaigns to help beat prostate cancer.

As sports fans, we have an important role to play in taking care of our health and looking out for each other. Events like the March for Men provide a fantastic platform for us to do just that. Through our shared love of sport, we can raise awareness of important issues like prostate cancer and work together to improve men’s health for generations to come.
