The Mikado is a comic opera by Gilbert and Sullivan that premiered in 1885. It tells the story of the town of Titipu, where flirting has been declared a capital crime. The play follows the adventures of Nanki-Poo, a wandering minstrel who is in love with Yum-Yum, one of the three little maids from school. However, she is promised to Ko-Ko, the unpopular Lord High Executioner.

Although The Mikado contains elements of classic opera, it also incorporates many comedic aspects. Gilbert and Sullivan were masters of satirical social commentary, and The Mikado is no exception. They lampooned the British class system, Victorian society, and politicians, among other things.

At the same time, some musical moments of The Mikado firmly ground this play within classical opera traditions. The overture, for example, sounds like a traditional overture to many operas, with a grand theme and prominent orchestra. The recitative dialogue throughout the piece also shares much in common with the sung recitatives found in many classical operas.

Furthermore, the chorus in The Mikado often performs their songs in the classical style, singing in four-part harmony, with clear melody lines and counterpoint. While there are modern elements to the music as well, such as jazz rhythms and some repetitive melodies that were popular at the time, it is clear that Gilbert and Sullivan drew inspiration from the conventions of classical opera when composing The Mikado.

Another aspect of The Mikado that connects it to classical opera is its eponymous character - the Emperor of Japan. Classical operas often feature royalty or characters of high status as their protagonists, and the Mikado fulfills that role here, complete with a large retinue.

Ultimately, while The Mikado may not be considered strictly speaking “classical opera,” it does bear many similarities to that genre. Its music draws on classical traditions, and its story features characters with the same majestic stature as those found in many operas. Ultimately, it should be viewed as a unique hybrid of many different elements, with both comedic and classical qualities that set it apart from other stage works of its time.
