The Oresteia is a Greek tragedy trilogy written by Aeschylus, consisting of three plays: Agamemnon, Choephori (also known as The Libation Bearers), and Eumenides. It tells the story of a cycle of violence in the House of Atreus and the eventual establishment of a system of justice and order in Athens.

While the Oresteia was written over 2,500 years ago, its themes of justice, revenge, and redemption are still relevant today. In fact, these themes can be seen in many Broadway shows that have become popular in recent years.

For example, the hit musical Hamilton tells the story of Alexander Hamilton, one of the founding fathers of the United States. Like the House of Atreus, Hamilton’s life was plagued by violence and tragedy, including the death of his son in a duel. However, instead of seeking revenge, Hamilton becomes a champion for justice and works to establish a system of government that values individual rights and freedoms.

Another musical that shares similarities with the Oresteia is Les Misérables. This show also portrays a cycle of violence and revenge, as the protagonist Jean Valjean seeks vengeance against his former captor Javert. However, like the characters in the Oresteia, Valjean eventually learns the value of forgiveness and redemption, leading to a powerful climax where he saves Javert’s life and sets him free.

Even more modern shows like Dear Evan Hansen and Come From Away can be seen as exploring similar themes. Both shows deal with the aftermath of tragedy and the search for justice and healing, as characters struggle to make sense of their experiences and find a way to move forward.

Overall, while the Oresteia may seem distant and unfamiliar to modern audiences, its underlying themes and messages are still very much alive in the world of Broadway. From classic shows like Les Misérables to newer productions like Hamilton and Dear Evan Hansen, Broadway continues to explore the timeless question of what it means to seek justice, find redemption, and overcome tragedy.
