The Pines of Rome

The Pines of Rome is a symphonic poem composed by Ottorino Respighi in 1924. It is the second work in his "Roman Trilogy," preceded by Fountains of Rome and followed by Roman Festivals. The piece depicts pine trees in different locations around Rome at different times of the day.

History of The Pines of Rome

Respighi's inspiration for this composition came from his love for the city of Rome and its surrounding countryside. The Pines of Rome is divided into four movements, each representing a specific location with its own unique atmosphere and character.

Movement I: The Pines of the Villa Borghese

This movement portrays children playing in the gardens of Villa Borghese, surrounded by majestic pine trees.

Movement II: The Pines Near a Catacomb

In this movement, Respighi evokes a sense of mystery and reverence as the music explores the quiet surroundings near catacombs.

Movement III: The Pines of the Janiculum

The third movement captures the beauty of the evening on the Janiculum Hill, overlooking the city of Rome. It features a haunting trumpet solo that echoes across the landscape.

Movement IV: The Pines of the Appian Way

The final movement is a grand finale depicting a Roman army marching along the historic Appian Way, with majestic pine trees lining their path.
