The Scottsboro Boys is a musical written by John Kander and Fred Ebb based on the real-life story of a group of African American boys who were falsely accused of rape in Alabama during the 1930s. The show premiered Off-Broadway in 2010 and transferred to Broadway later that year. Despite receiving critical acclaim, the show closed after only 49 performances due to low ticket sales.

The Scottsboro Boys are an important part of Broadway history because their story sheds light on the racial inequalities that existed in America during the early 20th century. The show explores themes of racism, injustice, and the struggle for civil rights. Through song and dance, it tells the powerful story of nine innocent young men who were victims of a corrupt legal system.

The show’s creators, Kander and Ebb, were known for tackling controversial topics in their work. They are also responsible for other popular musicals such as Cabaret and Chicago. The Scottsboro Boys was their final collaboration before Ebb’s death in 2004.

The cast of The Scottsboro Boys featured talented performers such as Joshua Henry, Colman Domingo, and John Cullum. It was directed and choreographed by Susan Stroman, who is known for her work on shows such as The Producers and Contact.

Despite the show’s brief run on Broadway, The Scottsboro Boys had a lasting impact on the theater community. It received 12 Tony Award nominations, including Best Musical, Best Book, and Best Score. Although it did not win any Tony Awards, it left a lasting impression on audiences and critics alike.

Today, The Scottsboro Boys continues to be performed in theaters across the country. Its message of racial justice and equality remains relevant today, more than ever before. The show serves as a reminder of the progress made in the fight for civil rights, but also of the ongoing work that still needs to be done. As the show’s final song says, “The fight goes on and on and on…”
