Football has always been a national pastime in the United States, attracting millions of fans every year to stadiums and living rooms across the country. The sport has also spawned a multitude of legends and myths, such as the “Immaculate Reception" or the “Hail Mary” pass. One such myth is the legendary “Seattle Game”, which took place on October 22, 2006 between the Seattle Seahawks and the Oakland Raiders.

The game was played at CenturyLink Field (then Qwest Field) in Seattle, Washington, one of the loudest stadiums in the NFL. The matchup featured two teams with vastly different records, as the Seahawks were 4-2 and the Raiders were 0-5. However, what made this game special was not the disparity in their win-loss records, but what happened during the coin toss.

The legend goes that during the coin toss, referee Walt Coleman flipped the coin and it landed on heads. But when he turned to Seahawks’ quarterback Matt Hasselbeck to ask if he wanted to kick or receive, Hasselbeck claimed he said “we want the ball, and we’re going to score!” in a show of bravado. The statement was picked up by the field microphone, and quickly became infamous among NFL fans.

The Seahawks received the opening kickoff and drove the ball down the field, but the drive stalled at Oakland’s 32-yard line. On fourth-and-two, Hasselbeck threw an interception to Raiders’ cornerback Fabian Washington. This set up Oakland for a drive that ended in a field goal, giving them an early lead.

The game turned ugly in the fourth quarter when Raiders’ defensive end Tyler Brayton roughed up Hasselbeck after he had thrown an interception, leading to a scuffle between both teams. Eventually, the Seahawks kicked a field goal to send the game into overtime.

The Seahawks won the toss and elected to receive. On the first play from scrimmage, Hasselbeck threw a pass that was intercepted by Raiders’ safety Stuart Schweigert, who promptly fumbled the ball back to the Seahawks. This led to a short drive and a game-winning field goal by Seattle kicker Josh Brown.

The “Seattle Game” has become one of the most storied games in NFL history, particularly for its infamous coin toss and Hasselbeck’s bold claim before the game. However, what is often overlooked is the actual football played during the game. Both teams struggled offensively, with Oakland being held to just twelve points and Seattle scoring only sixteen.

Despite this, the game will always be remembered for Hasselbeck’s words and the ensuing interception that set up the Raiders’ score. In many ways, it represents the essence of football; a game of fleeting moments and dramatic shifts, where any play can alter the outcome. As such, it remains a part of the rich tapestry of NFL history, and a legend that will continue to be passed down from generation to generation of football fans.
