Burton’s interest in theater was sparked at a young age when his parents would take him to see stage productions in their hometown of Burbank, California. He later went on to study at the California Institute of the Arts where he developed his skills as a director, animator, and artist.
It is through his love of theater that Burton has explored some of his most intriguing and unconventional stories, often taking inspiration from old horror films and gothic literature. His first collaboration with the world of theater came in 1982 with his short film ‘Vincent,’ which was nominated for an Academy Award. The film was a homage to horror icon Vincent Price and featured stop-motion animation alongside live-action footage.
Burton’s theatrical debut came in 2006 with his musical adaptation of ‘Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street’. The production, which was a joint venture between the West End and Broadway, received critical acclaim and won several Tony Awards, including Best Musical Revival. In addition to directing the show, Burton also designed the sets, costumes, and props.
Burton has since gone on to direct the stage adaptation of his own movie ‘The Nightmare Before Christmas’ with performances in London, Japan, and the US. The show features puppetry, projections, and live music performed by a full orchestra while staying true to the dark yet whimsical tone of the original movie.
His latest project in theater is a new adaptation of ‘Beetlejuice,’ which debuted on Broadway in March 2019. The show stays true to the beloved characters of the 1988 movie but also introduces new musical numbers and twists to keep audiences engaged.
