Over the course of his career, Thompson amassed a record of 40 wins (27 by knockout), 11 losses, and 2 draws. His most notable victories include two wins against British fighter David Price in 2013 and a win against Odlanier Solis in 2015. Thompson’s first shot at a world title came in 2008 when he faced Wladimir Klitschko for the IBF, IBO, and WBO heavyweight titles. Though he put up a good fight, Klitschko ultimately won the bout by technical knockout in the eleventh round.
In 2012, Thompson had another chance at a world title when he faced off against Klitschko’s older brother Vitali for the WBC heavyweight title. Unfortunately for Thompson, Vitali dominated the fight and won by unanimous decision.
Despite coming up short in his attempts to win a world title, Thompson gained a reputation as a skilled and resilient fighter. He was known for his counterpunching ability and his ability to absorb punishment and keep fighting.
Outside of boxing, Thompson has spoken candidly about his struggles with depression and substance abuse. In interviews, he has credited his family and faith with helping him overcome these challenges.
In 2018, Thompson announced his retirement from boxing after a career that spanned nearly two decades. Though he never won a world title, he left an indelible mark on the sport through his gritty performances and unwavering determination.
