Turas na mBan 2017: Encouraging Women's Participation in Sports

Turas na mBan, which means "women's journey" in Irish, is an annual cycling event that takes place in Ireland. It was created in 2008 to promote women’s involvement in sports, specifically cycling. Over the years, Turas na mBan has grown into a highly anticipated event for female cyclists and supporters.

In 2017, Turas na mBan took place from September 6th to 10th with participants from all over Europe. The event was divided into five stages with the starting point and finish line changing each day. The total race distance covered during these five days amounted to 400km (250 miles).

This year’s Turas na mBan saw a significant increase in the number of participants – both in terms of female cyclists and volunteers. In fact, Turas na mBan, in association with Cycling Ireland, launched a “Women in Cycling” initiative this year to encourage more women to get involved in cycling. This outreach program included seminars, workshops, and training sessions for women of all ages and backgrounds who were interested in cycling.

Turas na mBan is not just a race. It also provides an opportunity for female cyclists to network, share experiences, and build friendships. The organizers are committed to creating a safe and supportive environment where women can feel empowered and encouraged to challenge themselves physically and mentally.

The event attracted many notable female cyclists from around the world. Among them was Lydia Gurley from Killarney, County Kerry who was part of the national track cycling team that represented Ireland in the Rio Olympics in 2016. Gurley claimed victory on stage four of the race and finished second overall behind former Olympian and seven-time Irish champion, Eve McCrystal.

It is clear that Turas na mBan plays a significant role in promoting female participation in sports, and specifically in cycling. It provides a platform for women to showcase their athletic abilities, navigate challenging terrain, and push themselves beyond their limits.

The success of Turas na mBan is a tribute to both the organizers and the participants who work tirelessly to make this event a reality.
