The UAB Blazers women's basketball team has a rich history and an impressive record in college women's basketball. Let's take a closer look at this dynamic team.

UAB Blazers Women's Basketball Team History

The University of Alabama at Birmingham Blazers women's basketball team was first established in the 1976-1977 season under head coach Avie Bridges. Since then, the Blazers have had a storied history that includes conference championships, NCAA tournament appearances, and numerous standout players.

One of the highlights of the Blazers' history was their 1989-1990 season when they won the Sun Belt Conference championship. That year, the Blazers also made their first-ever NCAA tournament appearance, cementing their place in program history. This was followed by several other conference championships in the ensuing years, including titles in the Great Midwest Conference and Conference USA.

In more recent years, the Blazers struggled on the court, with several losing seasons. However, the team has experienced a resurgence since the hiring of head coach Randy Norton in 2015. Under his leadership, the team has improved every season, and in the 2018-2019 season, they recorded their first winning season in seven years.

Standout Players

Over the years, the Blazers women's basketball team has produced several standout players who went on to achieve great things in both college and professional basketball. Some notable players include:

- Deanna Jackson: An All-American guard who played for the Blazers in the late 1980s and early 1990s. She is the program's all-time leading scorer with 1,803 points.
- Crystal McFadden: Another former Blazers guard, McFadden played from 1994 to 1998 and holds the program record for steals (328) and assists (637).
- Demetress Adams: A forward who played for the Blazers from 2006 to 2010 and was named Conference USA Player of the Year in her senior season. She went on to play professionally overseas.

Recent Success

Despite a period of struggles, the Blazers women's basketball team seems to be trending upwards under Coach Norton. In the 2019-2020 season, the team finished with a 19-11 record and qualified for the WNIT postseason tournament. While the 2020-2021 season was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Blazers won their first four games and showed promise for the future.

Looking ahead, it seems that the UAB Blazers women's basketball team is poised for continued success. With a talented roster and coaching staff, the Blazers could soon find themselves competing for conference championships and NCAA tournament appearances once again.
