Music

On Friday, March 15th, the UCLA Chorale presented a concert at which they performed several pieces of Classical music. The concert was held in Dickson Court North, and was free and open to the public. The Chorale is composed of students from various majors across campus who have a passion for choir and vocal performance.

The concert began with the singing of Felix Mendelssohn's "Hear my Prayer." This piece is an excellent example of how Classical music conveys its themes through melody and harmony. The choir sang in unison at certain points, emphasizing the emotion in the text. They then transitioned into performing Mozart's "Ave Verum Corpus," a short sacred motet widely considered to be a masterpiece of the Classical era.

The highlight of the evening was Beethoven's Mass in C major, Opus 86. This mass composition very much reflects the structure and form of Classical music. It consists of six sections: Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Benedictus, and Agnus Dei. The choir was joined by four soloists, accompanied by a pianist and an organist using period instruments.

Throughout the concert, the UCLA Chorale exhibited exceptional musicianship as they conveyed the range of emotions present in each piece. Watching them perform showed us the full range of what the human voice can do and communicate through music. Each section was well-balanced and blended together seamlessly, creating a perfect harmony that drew the audience in.

Classical music has been around for centuries; it continues to influence new musical styles, and holds a constant place in the repertoire of choirs and orchestras alike. The UCLA Chorale's performance demonstrated the value of studying and practicing Classical music. Their precision and mastery of their craft showcased why Classical music remains an essential foundation for contemporary music and why we should preserve this art for future generations.

In conclusion, the UCLA Chorale's concert was a thoughtful and well-executed presentation of Classical music. Each piece showcased its unique beauty and remained faithful to the compositional structure that enables great works of art to be rediscovered, generation after generation. The audience left feeling satisfied and eager for more events like this one in the future.
