The University of New Orleans (UNO) baseball team has a rich history in the sport of baseball. Since its inception in 1961, the team has played in various leagues and conferences, including the Gulf States Conference, the Sun Belt Conference, and currently, the Southland Conference.

Over the years, the UNO Privateers have produced numerous professional baseball players, including Ron Maestri, who went on to coach the team from 1972-1985 before becoming the athletic director at UNO. Other notable alumni include Johnny Giavotella, Randy Bush, and Tom Braud.

The UNO baseball program has also experienced success on the field. In 1984, the team won the Sun Belt Conference championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. In 2007, the Privateers won the Southland Conference tournament and made it to the NCAA Tournament again.

In addition to producing successful players and teams, the UNO baseball program has also played a role in the development of baseball itself. In the early 1970s, Maestri introduced the “towel drill” to help pitchers with their mechanics. The drill involved using a towel instead of a ball to focus on arm and leg movement.

The UNO baseball program prides itself on not only developing talented players but also well-rounded individuals. The university places a strong emphasis on academic success, and many players go on to pursue graduate degrees and find success outside of baseball.

As with any sport, UNO baseball has faced challenges as well. In 2005, Hurricane Katrina devastated the city of New Orleans and impacted the UNO baseball program. The team had to play their home games at other universities due to damage sustained at their own stadium.

Despite the challenges, UNO baseball continues to thrive and produce successful players and teams. The Privateers’ commitment to excellence on and off the field reflects the values of the university and the city of New Orleans.
