The program was started in 1980 by then-head coach Clive Charles, who would later go on to become a major figure in the development of soccer in the United States. Charles was not only responsible for building one of the best soccer programs in the country, but he also played a significant role in the growth of soccer nationwide. In fact, Charles was listed as one of the 30 Most Influential People in American Soccer in the last 50 years by World Soccer Magazine.
Charles' emphasis on technical proficiency and tactical awareness has been passed down to his successors, including current head coach Garrett Smith. Under Smith's leadership, the Pilots continue to build upon their success and cultivate a winning culture. Since taking over in 2007, Smith has led the team to multiple appearances in the NCAA Tournament and several conference championships.
It's not just the success on the field that makes the University of Portland Women's Soccer program so impressive. Many of the players who have come through the program have gone on to play at the highest levels of the sport. Former Pilots include U.S. national team legends Tiffeny Milbrett and Shannon MacMillan, as well as current stars Megan Rapinoe and Emily Sonnett.
