Untitled America is a unique theatrical experience that explores the complex issues of incarceration and its impact on families and communities in the United States. The work, created by internationally renowned choreographer Kyle Abraham and his dance company, Abraham.In.Motion, premiered at the Joyce Theater in 2016 and has since been performed across the country.

At its core, Untitled America seeks to humanize those affected by incarceration and shed light on how it impacts people's lives. Through powerful movement and storytelling, the work captures the emotional and physical toll that incarceration takes on both inmates and their loved ones.

One of the most striking aspects of Untitled America is its use of live music and spoken word. The score, composed by Grammy nominee Jerome Begin, features a mix of classical and contemporary music styles, including hip-hop and soul. Interspersed throughout the performance are recordings of interviews with incarcerated individuals and their families, as well as poetic passages that offer insight into the personal experiences of those affected by the criminal justice system.

The performance itself is divided into three distinct acts, each exploring a different aspect of incarceration. In the first act, titled "Dearest Home," we see the impact of imprisonment on children and parents. Dancers move fluidly across the stage, embodying the emotions of separation and isolation felt by families torn apart by the criminal justice system.

The second act, titled "The Bystanders," focuses on the friends and family left behind when someone is incarcerated. Here, the choreography becomes more frenetic, capturing the sense of chaos and confusion that can accompany the arrest and imprisonment of a loved one.

Finally, in "Invisible," the third act, we see the struggles of those who have been released from prison and are trying to reintegrate back into society. The dancers move through space in fractured, disjointed movements, echoing the sense of disorientation and disconnection that many formerly incarcerated individuals face upon release.

Overall, Untitled America is a remarkable work of theater that uses movement, music, and spoken word to elevate the voices of those affected by incarceration. By humanizing these individuals and offering insight into their experiences, the piece challenges us to reconsider our approach to criminal justice in America and the impact it has on our communities.
