The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), located in San Antonio, has been making strides in the football realm since the program’s establishment in 2011. The UTSA Roadrunners compete in the Division I Football Bowl Subdivision as part of Conference USA.

Despite being a relatively new program, the Roadrunners have made several notable accomplishments. In their inaugural season, they finished with a record of 4-6 as an independent team. Their first official game as a member of Conference USA was in 2013, where they defeated New Mexico State 21-13. In 2014, they had their first winning season with a 4-4 conference record and a bowl game appearance.

One of the key players that contributed to the Roadrunners’ success in those early years was quarterback Eric Soza. Soza led the team in passing yards, rushing yards, and touchdowns in the 2012 and 2013 seasons. He was named Conference USA Newcomer of the Year in 2012 and earned All-Conference USA honorable mention recognition in 2013. Since then, other notable players such as Jarveon Williams, David Morgan II, Josiah Tauaefa, and Marcus Davenport have helped to elevate the program.

UTSA’s head coach Jeff Traylor, who took over the program in 2020, has also played a significant role in the team’s recent success. In his first year, he led the Roadrunners to a 7-5 overall record and a berth in the First Responder Bowl. Traylor’s brand of football emphasizes physicality and toughness, which can be seen in the team’s improved offensive and defensive performances.

Offensively, the Roadrunners have shown improvement in terms of scoring and yardage gained per game. Last season, they averaged 31.8 points and 417.5 yards per game – both of which are up from the previous season. On defense, they ranked first in Conference USA and ninth in the nation in total defense, allowing just 310.8 yards per game.

With a solid foundation of talent and coaching, the future looks bright for UTSA football. The team has already shown that they can compete at a high level and will only continue to improve moving forward. As San Antonio’s only Division I football program, the Roadrunners have the potential to become a significant source of pride for the city.
